The eyes of the world aquaculture insurance industry will be on China next month with the government expected to announce the framework for co-funding of insurance cover for the country’s millions of aquaculture cultivators. The announcement is expected after the annual National People’s Congress, the annual week-long legislature, which sits next week.

SALMON farmers have blasted a new “guide” published to help Scottish communities to “engage” with aquaculture developments. The Sustainable Inshore Trust (Sift) – with the assistance and support of the Salmon and Trout Association and Fish Legal – has produced an information pack aimed at assisting the public in “having their voices heard” over new proposals in the industry.

By combining aquaculture with wet paddy farming in its coastal areas Bangladesh can meet food security and climate change issues, says a report. The approach promises more nutritious food without causing environmental damage, and has the potential for a "blue-green revolution" on Bangladesh's existing crop areas, extending to about 10m hectares (25m acres) and an additional nearly 3m hectares that remain waterlogged for four to six months.

For the second year in a row there has been an increase in the number of diagnosed CMS (cardiomyopathy syndrome) cases. From 2010 to 2012, the number had almost doubled, leading to significant losses. "In 2012 we found CMS in 89 plants," says Camilla Fritsvold, a researcher at the National Veterinary Institute.
